A downloadable game for Windows, macOS, and Linux

Flare (Free Libre Action Roleplaying Engine) is a simple game engine built to handle a very specific kind of game: single-player 2D action RPGs. Flare is not a re-implementation of an existing game or engine. It is a tribute to and exploration of the action RPG genre.

Flare comes bundled with a game made by the Flare team, the Empyrean Campaign. The Empyrean Campaign's story begins with the player being exiled from their homeland of Empyrean, resulting in them embarking on a quest to regain entry. This journey takes the player through many regions, with plenty of side quests along the way.

Flare was created by Clint Bellanger and has gather several contributors over the years. For more information, please see the following links:

Does the team accept donations ?

The project as a whole doesn't accept donations, but there are some individuals in and around the project that you can contribute to. I've updated the FAQ page with a list of them: https://flarerpg.org/faq/#donations

Awesome, thank you. I'll add them to my donation list.

Holy smokes. This game is really really good

Ho messo la lingua italiana ma i testi sono sempre in inglese, troppa pubblicità e poco da comprare dal fabbro, per il resto un buon gioco

I loved the game! I'll check the engine! Good Job! Good Old Diablo-style game (+engine obviously)!

(1 edit)

I really like this game. However, I am only able to get to the waypoint for Lochport Cemetary. There are no other indications of further places to go--and I know there should be. The version is 1.09.01. I am running Ubuntu 20.04.1. I see that there is a 1.11 version listed here. Perhaps that is the issue; needs to be updated? I downloaded that version--a tar file. Not really sure how to handle it though.

Your version shouldn't hinder your ability to move forward in this case.

In Lochport Cemetery, the way forward is located in the south part of the map. If you come across some gravestones that are spawning zombies, you'll be on the right track.

Thanks so much for your reply. I've been to Lochport repeatedly and have found no exits to other areas. I'll go once more but I've been there numerous time, looking. I went into the underground area (I forget the name and got--I think it was a key, for another quest, which I don't have. Ah, what I DIDN'T do was to look back before I left that area. Zombies had spawned....another area! I then found the waypoint.

how do you install this on windows ??

i run the installer, run the game and it crashes.

please help!!

That's unfortunate. It sounds like you ran into this bug, which has no solution at the moment: https://github.com/flareteam/flare-game/issues/816

I've been recently working with someone making a Flare mod that uses Windows, and I have been providing them with development builds of the engine. If you're willing to, you can try copying the flare.exe from this to your install directory: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1DRLlo7nWfnIHNs7JBqKWrfwNPmDgMKYb/view?usp=shari...

Either way, could you provide a bit more information for me? It would be helpful to know:

  • Your Windows version (e.g. Windows 10 64-bit)
  • Your CPU & GPU
  • If you use an alternative input method for another language

I think that i found the solution for that problem.

I opened text file settings.txt in this location:

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\flare\config

and changed the value of default render device to sdl (default value was set to sdl_hardware)

after that i launched the game, and get the window Flare appears to already be runnig. I click Reset and game now works for me.

My specificications:

Windows XP 32 bit

CPU: Pentium 4 2.8 GHz

GPU: Ati Radeon 9200

I hope that this helps .

I love this art style. Great game!

And the music is great!

FLARE has three classes, check out the skills in this video:

I think Exiled Kingdoms for mobile (great for a mobile game) was made with this engine after seeing these images (same character images and textures)

Exiled Kingdoms uses its own engine as far as I know. But as you noticed, many of the art assets are the same.

Thanks for this great game. Easy to play, easy to create own mods and (though I´m a total NOOB to C++) easy to modify and compile (I´m using Linux).

Downloaded this from Flathub, but since it's the same game, I'll just say it reminds me a lot of Darkstone. And for the few people who remember that game, that is quite a complement.

I remember trying an alpha of this game years ago, and while I liked it, I thought back then that this game would never be finished. I deeply thank you for proving me wrong. I'll be looking forward for updates!

Tons of contributors have helped keep this game moving. Justin Jacobs leads the engine effort and deserves a ton of credit for this 1.0 launch!

i have to sugest a campain with procedural generation

Excellent game. You guys rock. I hope you continue to develop the game and make a new campaign, new content, new quests, etc.

The game is better than 90% of steam indie games for linux.

Definitely recommend to try it out. The game is available in Snap store for those who don't want to download archive

Command to install in ubuntu:
sudo snap install flare-rpg

For other distros check how to install snap and then use command above.

Thanks for the devs for the game, love it!

>The game is better than 90% of steam indie games for linux.
